Théo Pourchaire makes the step up to F2 for Bahrain debut
Sauber Academy driver, Théo Pourchaire, will make his FIA F2 Championship debut as the series arrives in Bahrain for the two final rounds of the 2020 season.
Having claimed the runner-up spot in this year’s FIA F3 Championship, joining the highly competitive series as a rookie, Théo has been one of the season’s brightest stars and the move will see him make his first acquaintance with F2’s powerful machinery, racing for HWA Racelab.
The 17-year-old Frenchman, who was unveiled as a member of Sauber Academy’s driver roster earlier this season, will take the double header in Bahrain as a valuable opportunity to gain experience against an experienced set of drivers as he continues his progression in Formula One’s junior series.
Théo Pourchaire: “I’m very grateful to HWA and the Sauber Academy for the opportunity to race in F2. Taking part in these two weekends will be an amazing experience and there will be so much for me to learn as a driver. I know it’s going to be a big challenge, all other drivers have lots of experience and I’m just making my debut, but I am focusing on the learning process. If the end result is good, that’s a bonus but the important thing is to come away from these races as a better driver.”
Frédéric Vasseur, Team Principal Alfa Romeo Racing ORLEN and CEO Sauber Motorsport AG: “We are very happy to support Théo as he makes his debut in F2. He was one of the revelations of 2020 and to see him make the step up to F2 is a reward for the incredible season he completed in F3. It’ll be important for him to approach these races as a learning opportunity: he is just 17 and he’s going up against drivers with a lot of experience. The pressure is off, he just has to take this chance to learn about the cars and get used to this very competitive level of racing.”
